Kisumu, Kenya

We will be in Kisumu January 6 – 10, 2010.

Kisumu, is the chief city of western Kenya, Kisumu is the country’s third largest city. It is an important freshwater port and serves as a base for shipbuilding and ship-repair facilities. The city serves 4 million people in the surrounding area, a rich agricultural region where farmers produce much of Kenya’s grain and cattle.

Kisumu is home to the local Luo people and labor – and home-oriented people in western Kenya. This demographics played key issues in the Kenyan politics. The city’s economy suffered much however, by diversifying into light industry and services, the city eventually recovered and regained its role as an economic regional center.
